Bandaranayake College History

We are very proud to reveal the glorious history of Bandaranayke College which has remarked its pride and grace for presenting an educated, disciplinary generation for the future.
Sri Lanka was dominated by the British rulers in 1795. In 1918 there were some educational changes and as the result St. Mary’s College in Veyangoda and Udugampola Vidayalaya were established in Gampaha District to enhance the education of children. Grade 6, 7, 8 classes were shifted from Udugampola Vidayalaya to Henarathgoda Senior English College and about 100 students was present initially. Its former Principal was Mr. Charles Samarasooriya, who was appointed to the new school on 18th September 1918. In 1921, as a result of the pressure imposed by the Government Agent the school was renamed as “Gampaha Government School”. 04th October 1921 this school was established at the place where Yashodara Devi Balika Vidayalaya is situated at present. It provided a great service for the education of the children around this place. It was not only an education centre but was a communication center too. There was a group of about 150 boy scouts who contributed themselves to build up a greater society. Mr. Charles Samarasooriya performed his duty and service to his best ability until 30th April1922, making the school a wholesome and prominent education centre. After that Mr. T.S Selvaiya became the Principal of this school on 01st February 1923 for a short period and left in 1924.
